Curatorship: Four Faces

Friday, February 12th, 2010

This visually rich lecture aims to inform and demystify the amorphous practice of curating contemporary art. Four regionally based curators share their experience and ideas including examples of creating conceptual frameworks, organizing and activism, selecting artists and works, and building collections.

5:30pm – 6:30pm: “Tropicality: Contemporary Art from Tropical Societies” by Viviana Mejia

A curatorial framework presenting visual narratives of selected art works from artists based in the tropics. How can the notion of “tropicality” become a critical reflection on the exoticism of the term “tropical”?

6:30pm – 7:30pm: ”Sanskrit and the New Cosmopolitanisms” by Christopher Meyers

Sanskrit used to be at the center of culture for much of South and South-east Asia, and so much of the world. What is cosmopolitanism in light of the Sanskrit model in South and Southeast Asia? What are the sites around which we can build a cosmopolitan? Can there still be such a thing as a global culture? Is it only for rich people? What are the ways we can make connections across cultures?
