Cambodian Prum Vannak was recently recognized by the US State Department as one of 10 “heroes” in the fight against human trafficking.

In 2006, he was kidnapped from Cambodia and forced into virtual slavery in Thailand. For three years, he worked on a fishing boat for 20 hours a day and was mistreated, starved, and tortured. Following his rescue he has captured his experiences in a series of drawings that he hopes will help stop this modern form of slavery.

This month the Cambodian-German Cultural Center Meta House launches the first FREE YOUR MINDS Festival, with kind support of Friedrich-Naumann-Foundation and numerous other partners. Musicians, performers, DJs and film directors are traveling to Cambodia to celebrate the freedom of the arts. Artists from SE Asia, Europe, Australia and the USA gather in Phnom Penh for a creative exchange of ideas.

World-renowned war photographer Tim Page has worked for agencies like Time Life and Associated Press. He is said to have partly inspired the character played by Dennis Hopper in the film “Apocalypse Now.” In the Art Café we exhibit classic photos from Vietnam and Cambodia as well as new works.

Mr. Page has been in Cambodia for the last two months photographing the Ministry of Land’s Land Administration Sub Sector Program (LASSP), which has to date issued more than two million land titles to mostly rural poor Cambodians and resolved the majority of land disputes in the program areas. His presence in Cambodia was funded by the Government of Finland through FINNMAP.

At 8.30PM we present a “sneak preview” of a documentary about the challenges of development work in Cambodia, as well as the documentaries LAND IS LIFE (produced by GIZ) and PEPPER: FREEDOM (produced by the Friedrich-Naumann-Foundation). Drinks and food are provided.
