"The Immigrant" a powerful new exhibition by artist MAO SOVIET

OPENING TONIGHT -THURSDAY 3RD JULY 6PM -AT JAVA CAFE & GALLERY.....

"The issue of unemployment has made many daughters living in poor
families throughout Cambodia leave their beloved homes to go to the
city in order to find work. Moreover, many of them are forced to
immigrate into other countries including North Korea, Malaysia, and
Thailand, where they are faced with harsh labor conditions.

I want my paintings to interpret this cultural landscape and the
issues faced by women in our society, in order to show and inform
people that we must resolve this matter together and not let their
plight pass us by. "

Mao Soviet

Mao soviet was born in 1982 in Battambang Province. He studied
general art from 1996 to 2000 and then modern art from 2000 to 2004
at Phare Pounleu Selpak Organization in Battambang. Soviet has shown
his work at the Center Cultural France in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and
and Battambang , he has also exhibited at the Alliance Caf in Siem
Reap, Cambodia.

It's not the Fourth if you aren't grillin with a beer in one hand and bottle rockets in the other.

Tim, Nora, Isadora, and Lis invite you to celebrate the 4th of July (or at least First Friday if you're not American) at Freedom Pool (formerly known as "that pool in front of the Yellow Pages building"). Been a rough week thus far, especially after a long day at the office yesterday.

Just watched Rudy and must run off to the park toss the football (American foosball) around. Oh, only 7-8 more weeks til tailgating, slightly racist dancing mascots, whiskey and waffles, and of course stop and go (and stop and go and stop) intense American football action! Cheers!

August 1992. Savannah, 28 years old, finds himself back in Phnom Penh after
four years on Cambodia's northern front, fighting the Khmer Rouge. Like the
rest of his generation, he's known only war since infancy, camps, hunger and
massacres. All he's got left now is his uncle, Sôn, as the rest of the
family was entirely annihilated by Pol Pot's regime. One evening, at the
dance bar where his war buddy Maly is working as bouncer, Savannah falls
prey to the charm of the beautiful Srey Poeuv, one of the bar girls, who,
from time to time, also serve the desires of the richest patrons. The two
young people from a sacrificed generation are soon to be victims to their

laden and the rebel forces took place in the Taliban stronghold of

first feature film shot in an active war zone!

Ros Sereysothea was Cambodia's most beloved female rock singer until Pol
Pot's nightmarish regime took over the country in 1975. Her voice, once
used to entertain, was now her only chance of survival. Greg Cahill's
acclaimed short film (Winner, Cambofest & Los Angeles Short Film
Festival) stars actress Sophea Pel as Ros Sereysothea. Plans are on the
table to develop the short film into a full-length feature film. (2006,
25 minutes, Khmer w/ English Subtitles). Greg Cahill will be present a
screening a do a Q&A.

The primaries have ended in the USA. Here's to hoping that we can all cast our ballots again at USA Donuts come December. Perhaps a similar strategy in the states would increase turnout - Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks voting centers. Also, is it me or are the Dunkin Donuts Munchkins a complete rip off the Umpa Lumpas from Willy Wonka?

Welcome to "The Mystique of the Orient and other drawings" by Nicolas.C.Grey in his premiere exhibition at Java Cafe and Gallery and also his first in Cambodia. For this exhibition he will showcase 28 works that have been produced during his passage through Asia. These illustrations are exquisitely executed and will hopefully give viewers an alternative view of Asia and its diverse morsels, through the eyes of one Nicolas.C.Grey.

Among other things Nicolas has written and published underground comics, painted cinema hoardings, and exhibited with Britart in London. He now lives and works in Phnom Penh.

"For this exhibition, I have, in part, created a series of drawings that in a small way convey my feelings about Asia.

Having lived in various Asian Countries for the past few years, I find them to be wonderful places full of mystery and delight. But as the modernization of Asia continues, through mass products, global communications and cheap air travel, I feel a certain standardization of aesthetic.

As a child growing up in London, Asia always had a certain mystique. A strange dark continent filled with unknowable things. I am interested in what the earliest travelers must have felt, coming to a land so different from their own, as if waking up in a strange dream.

This is the Asia that I see, an Asia that, perhaps, lives entirely in the darkness of my imagination."

Hi all,

Finally back in Phnom Penh after a month of eating mexican food, backyard games of football, and Old Style at Cubs games in the US of A. Good to be back.

I wish that Cambodia had movie theaters so we could watch Indy continue his quest for some ancient relic that a military superpower also happens to want (thank god Harrison Ford found the holy grail and eternal youth in his last epic). To tide you over, here's a video of a group of college students with too much time on their hands who created a giant Lego boulder and made their friend run down a street in front of it.

Die Dokumentationen der ostdeutschen Filmemacher Walter Heynowski und
Gerhard Scheumann (heutzutage im Vetrieb von Progress/Berlin) erfuhren eine
für ihr Genre außerordentliche Verbreitung. Sie wurden in mehr als 75
Ländern aufgeführt und galten als Markenartikel des DDR-Films. Mit "Die
Angkar" legte Studio H&S 1981 seinen zweiten Film über das Terrorregime Pol
Pots in Kambodscha vor, der zu den wichtigsten und überzeugendsten Arbeiten

symbol of the heart and soul of the Cambodian nation, as one of the

up that diverse and captivating country. The tourism initiative "Stay

People not only fish but also plant rice, use the Mekong and its associated
tributaries as a means of communication and transportation. Two powerful

Clint Eastwood's epic film is based on the book "Letters From Commander in
Chief General Tadamichi Kuritayashi" (portrayed on screen by Ken Watanabe)
and "So Sad to Fall in Battle: An Account of War" by Kumiko Kakehashi about
the Battle of Iwo Jima. While some characters, such as Saigo, are fictional,
the overall battles as well as several of the commanders are based upon

The 2008 Festival of Music - Phnom Penh

This unique event, celebrated simultaneously by millions of people throughout the world, will take place in Phnom Penh from June 16 through June 21. Every evening during the festival, Khmer and French musicians will invade the premises of the French Cultural Center to share their musical passions and make Phnom Penh dance to their rhythms.

On the program for the festivities are the following:

June 16: Demonstration of six traditional Khmer instruments by the musicians of Sovanna Phum.

June 17: Concert of Arak sacred music, conducted by Yun Khean, professor at the Royal University of Fine Arts.

June 18: Original outdoor screening of Charlie Chaplin's "The Kid," with accompaniment by musicians from the Royal University of Fine Arts.

June 19: Western classical music performed by Cambodian musicians.

June 20: Original musical performance by two French accordionists and Cambodian musicians / To be followed by the Festival of Music in many city bars, well into the night …

June 21: Concert by Cambodian stars, followed by X-Makeena, a French electronic music group, and concluding with "Funk Night" at the Café du Centre…

In consideration of the global aspects of our aims with CamboFest, we're now offering **fee waivers** to filmmakers who can locate an additional film submission from a filmmaker from a lesser developed nation (see the UNDP development index here: http://hdr.undp.org/en/statistics/)

SO: filmmakers from "highly developed nations" (US, UK, etc)

1) find a "buddy" filmmaker from one of the UNDP's list from Medium Development [Dominica through Gambia] on down to Low Development [Senegal through Sierra Leone] who wants to submit their movie to CamboFest

2) wrangle your entries and print out this announcement and include it with both submissions--

3) both movies will be waivered!*

IMPORTANT: Please understand that this wouldn't apply to foreign filmmakers who have emigrated to a developed host country and have made their movie there (ie, a filmmaker from Laos who has already moved to LA and has made her/his movie there with the support of the LA production environment wouldn't qualify)

The whole idea is to find and "reward" those filmmakers from lesser developed countries who have slugged it out in a (presumably) less robust media production sector in their home country, along with the "buddy" filmmakers from the more advanced nations who have gone to the trouble to locate and invite those films...
